Downtown Road Construction is Ahead of Schedule

Plus Foundry on 3rd office to open by the end of the month and WPS Powerhouse project gains momentum

There’s something to celebrate in downtown Wausau, and it’s called PROGRESS. Washington Street is once again open from First to Third Streets and sooner than expected.

“Phases one and two of the road work are complete, and while phase three will keep part of Washington Street closed a little longer, we are ahead of schedule,” said Allen Wesolowski, city engineer.

The plan is to convert Washington Street into a two-way thoroughfare, enhancing accessibility and connectivity for both drivers and pedestrians. This change, although challenging for local businesses during the process, is anticipated to bring long-term benefits including increased visibility and direct access to shops and services. With a wider street and two-way traffic, businesses benefit from heightened visibility as drivers traveling in both directions are more likely to notice and stop at shops and restaurants.

Julie Bollmann, executive director of Children’s Imaginarium, is relieved to have the western section of Washington Street open in time for summer activities at the museum. “It’s exciting to have it open again for our visitors,” she said. “We’re kicking off the summer with June Dairy Month, where children can explore the science of dairy, including a hands-on activity of butter making.”

Washington Street between Third and Fifth Streets will be closed for at least two more weeks.

By the end of June, T. Wall Enterprises will have a leasing trailer outside the Foundry on 3rd, where potential tenants can learn more about the mixed-use development opening in the fall. Staff will be providing hard hat tours to prospective residents two to three days a week until the property opens.

“We’re currently accepting applications for a property manager,” said Holly Corona, director of operations for T. Wall Enterprises. “We are hoping for someone with experience in property management, preferably two to three years.” Indeed has the position listed at this time.
