Transformation Ahead: Downtown Road Construction Starts April 14

April 11, 2025

Road construction begins on April 14 along Washington Street, paving the way for the highly anticipated Foundry on 3rd to open November of this year. Pember Companies Inc., based in Menominee, WI, leads the construction efforts, which will last throughout the spring and summer months.

While parts of Washington Street will be closed for the next few months, the city is committed to ensuring that shops and restaurants remain accessible. This project will not only enhance the infrastructure but will also contribute to the overall revitalization of downtown Wausau.

“Pedestrian access to their favorite businesses will always be maintained to the maximum extent possible,” said Allen Wesolowski, city engineer.

During the construction phases, traffic will be rerouted, and on-street parking will be limited. However, the JC Penney parking ramp will remain open with free parking available during construction, providing a convenient parking alternative. Wesolowski encourages patrons of Washington and Third Street businesses to utilize this parking facility and to walk along the north side of Washington Street to reach their destinations. Additionally, visitors to the Children’s Imaginarium are advised to use the Sears Ramp and Lot 18 off Forest Street.

The upcoming construction will include utility installations, as well as improvements to the roadway, sidewalks, and streetscapes, all designed to enhance the aesthetic and functional landscape of downtown Wausau.

“While we anticipate some delays in the process, we remain optimistic about the revitalization of downtown Wausau this fall and look forward to the positive changes it will bring,” said Dave Eckmann, president of Wausau Opportunity Zone (WOZ). “This project signifies a new era of growth and opportunity for our community.”
