Traffic Update: Parking Changes on Washington Street Pave the Way for a More Accessible Downtown

August 1, 2024

The transformation of Washington Street is underway. Starting the week of August 5, the angled parking spots on Washington Street, between Third and Fourth Streets, will be replaced with parallel parking to make room for foundational work on the Foundry on 3rd. The street will remain open to traffic. However, on-street parking may not be available for up to three days during the process. Approximately ten parallel spots will be created.

This change is part of the city’s ultimate goal to open Washington Street to two-way traffic in the Spring of 2025. By modernizing infrastructure and improving traffic patterns, the city is fostering an environment that promotes accessibility and community engagement.

Free Parking for Two Hours
Downtown Wausau offers many parking options, including surface lots, ramps, and on-street parking, with free parking for the first two hours. To use the lots and ramps, park and register the license plate using the nearby pay station or the Passport Parking phone app. For long-term parking solutions, the city offers tagless parking permits.
